Connected by Design Tour
Affordable Technologies for Work and Play
Hosted
by Broadband Architects –
Sandy
Teger and Dave Waks
Escorted by husband &
wife team Dave Waks and Sandy Teger, well-known broadband experts and founders
of Broadband Home Central (www.BroadbandHomeCentral.com),
tour visitors will learn how broadband technologies can help transform a house
into a connected home, easily and practically.
According to Waks,
“Broadband is clearly the next residential utility. As it becomes more widely
available across the
Teger adds, "Lots of
previous products were best suited for enthusiasts and technical experts. Here
we're showing products and services that can be used by real families, without
breaking the bank." Furthermore, Teger says "the benefits of
connected homes range from audio and video entertainment where and when you
want it to lowered energy costs."
What Will Visitors of the Connected
by Design Tour See?
The Connected by
Design Tour will incorporate a multiple-media digital design tour. Visitors
will take an audio-enhanced tour using digital headsets that key to important
elements in the house, enabling them to learn about the applications that
broadband and connectivity make possible. The tour will highlight four
"connected by design" elements to enrich the way people live.
·
Broadband to the home is becoming as essential to consumer's lives as
electricity or plumbing, and provides the foundation for the rest of the Connected
by Design Tour. Cox Communications will deliver its services over a
fiber connection to the showhouse, and will provide video entertainment
including HDTV, video on demand and personal video recording; high speed
Internet access; and IP telephony service.
·
Broadband in the home is the second building block. Leviton will
demonstrate a variety of home networking technologies, including structured
cabling and networking over existing telephone wiring. Wireless networking will
also be demonstrated.
·
Broadband-enabled "appliances" are the third building block.
These devices include a media center PC and digital media adapters to connect
PCs to existing audio and video systems.
·
Finally, the tour will include a variety of "connected
applications" that take advantage of the broadband infrastructure.
These include on-demand audio and video content, and large
"jukeboxes" stored on home PCs and played on existing audio and video
systems. Nevada Power, Leviton and Square D will together show how they are
leveraging connected technologies to lower consumer costs, reduce energy
consumption and improve the environment.
The Connected by
Design Tour is part of the Home by Design Showhouse, a beautiful
house designed by Sarah Susanka AIA, author of the Not So Big House
books. Furniture by Green Design provides a perfect match between Susanka’s style
and the need to house many media and electronics components and to simplify
connecting them.
Teger and Waks, the
connected tour hosts, have spent their careers applying leading-edge
communications and computing technologies to emerging customer needs for useful
applications. After successful careers at AT&T and Prodigy, they have been
dedicating their efforts to fulfilling the promise of residential broadband for
the masses. They operate the Broadband Home Central website (www.BroadbandHomeCentral.com),
produce a monthly controlled-circulation report for members of the broadband
industry, and provide consulting services.
